If you’ve spent any time in SEO forums or LinkedIn threads this year, you’ve probably run into some version of this claim: that ChatGPT doesn’t crawl the web on its own, that it leans on Bing’s index as its backbone for live results, and that if your pages aren’t in Bing’s index, ChatGPT simply can’t cite them. It’s a punchy line, and it’s built on a real data point — but the line itself goes further than the data actually supports. The honest answer is more useful than the dramatic one: Bing indexing is a genuinely important input for several AI search experiences, especially Bing’s own AI features and Microsoft Copilot, and it correlates strongly with what ChatGPT cites. It is not, however, a replacement for Google indexing, and being in Bing’s index does not guarantee an AI assistant will ever mention your page.
This article walks through what’s actually been tested, what the platforms themselves say, and what that means for how you prioritize your time this year.
Start with the honest answer
Bing indexing matters most when your visibility goal runs through Bing-adjacent surfaces — Bing Search itself, Microsoft Copilot, and to a meaningful but not exclusive degree, ChatGPT Search. Google indexing still matters more for overall organic reach, because Google simply handles more search volume in the US than any other engine, and it now has its own AI layer (AI Overviews and AI Mode) sitting directly on top of that index. Neither engine’s index alone determines whether an AI assistant cites you. That decision happens one step later, after indexing, and it depends on relevance, source quality, freshness, and how the AI system decides to answer that specific question.
Six words that get treated as one word
A lot of confusion in this space comes from collapsing six different things into a single idea: “being findable.” They’re not the same, and mixing them up leads to bad advice.
A page first has to be accessible to a crawler — nothing blocking robots.txt, no firewall rules quietly rejecting the bot. Then it needs to be indexed, meaning the engine has actually stored and processed it, which is not the same as ranking well. From there it might rank for a query, which is different again from being retrieved when an AI system searches on a user’s behalf, because retrieval depends on how that system interprets and possibly rewrites the original question. Even retrieval doesn’t guarantee a citation
The AI still has to select your page as worth referencing over the other pages it pulled. And a citation is different from a brand mention, since an assistant can talk about a company without linking to it at all.
Every competitor article on this topic that leads with “Bing matters more” skips over most of these steps. That gap is exactly where a more careful article earns trust — and, frankly, ranks better, because it answers the follow-up questions readers actually have.
The 87% statistic, and what it doesn’t prove
The number driving most of this conversation comes from Seer Interactive, which reviewed more than 500 citations across roughly 100 ChatGPT search queries and found that over 87% of the cited URLs matched a result in Bing’s top 20 organic results for the same query, compared with a 56% match rate against Google (where matches skewed to a median position around 17). That’s a real and interesting finding — it shows Bing visibility correlates strongly with what ChatGPT ends up citing, at least for the queries and time period in that sample.
But treat it as directional evidence, not a technical rule, for a few reasons the study itself flags. The sample was about 100 queries, not a cross-section of everything people ask ChatGPT. Many of the test queries leaned toward “best” and “top” comparison-style searches, which tend to surface affiliate sites, roundups, and news aggregators more than, say, local service pages or niche B2B content. ChatGPT can also rewrite a single prompt into several different search queries or run follow-up searches, so matching the original question to a single Bing SERP doesn’t fully capture what’s happening behind the scenes. And close to 13% of citations in the study didn’t match Bing’s results at all, which on its own disproves any claim of exclusive dependence.
So the accurate way to describe it: strong correlation in a specific, comparison-heavy sample — not proof that ChatGPT reads only from Bing’s index. It’s also worth noticing how that same number tends to get reused elsewhere. Some Bing SEO guides cite it as “87% alignment,” others round it into claims that ChatGPT “uses Bing’s search API 92% of the time,” and a few go further and assert that roughly 90% of ChatGPT citations come from pages that don’t even rank in Google’s top 20 — which, if anything, argues against Bing (or Google) ranking position being the deciding factor at all. When a single directional study starts generating a family of increasingly specific-sounding percentages across different sites, that’s usually a sign the number has drifted further from the original methodology than the confidence in it suggests.
What OpenAI and Google actually say
Rather than guessing at how these systems work, it’s worth going to the source. OpenAI’s own documentation describes ChatGPT Search as capable of working with third-party search providers and partner content, naming Bing and Shopify as examples of providers it can draw on — which is a meaningfully different picture than “ChatGPT is a Bing wrapper.” OpenAI also publishes guidance for publishers who want their content eligible to be found and cited: allow the OAI-SearchBot crawler, and make sure your hosting or CDN isn’t silently blocking its published IP ranges. If that crawler can’t reach your pages, none of your Bing or Google indexing status matters for ChatGPT visibility specifically.
Google, for its part, has been explicit that AI Overviews and AI Mode are built on its existing Search index and retrieval systems, not a separate technical track — meaning there’s no special “AI SEO” checklist beyond standard indexing eligibility, foundational content quality, and crawl access. Google has also described “query fan-out,” where a single AI Mode question can trigger several related searches across subtopics before the system composes an answer. That’s worth internalizing: optimizing for one exact-match keyword phrase misses most of what the AI system is actually querying for behind the scenes.
As of June 2026, Google also started rolling out dedicated generative AI performance reports inside Search Console, giving site owners a separate view of impressions specifically from AI Overviews, AI Mode, and Discover’s AI features, rather than having that data buried inside the general performance report. It’s an impressions-only view for now — no clicks, no query-level detail yet — and it’s still rolling out gradually to a subset of properties, so don’t be alarmed if you don’t see it on your own site immediately.
Microsoft moved first here: Bing Webmaster Tools launched its own AI Performance report in beta back in February 2026, showing which pages are being cited in AI-generated answers across Bing and Copilot surfaces, along with visibility trends over time. If you’re serious about measuring AI visibility rather than guessing at it, both dashboards are now worth checking regularly, not just Bing’s.
Why a page can rank on Google and be invisible on Bing
This isn’t a hypothetical. Independent research from Glen Allsopp, who ran a comparison across 10,000 hand-picked “best product” style queries, found only 48 domains overlapping in the top 100 results between Google and Bing for the same searches, and just 162 of the top 500 domains overlapped at all. Both engines ranked a similar number of domains overall, but Google promoted far fewer individual URLs than Bing did — 82,000 versus 120,000 in his dataset — and some major sites behaved completely differently across the two: Reddit, for instance, ranked poorly in Bing largely because it had blocked Microsoft’s crawler outright.
That’s a striking gap for supposedly similar search engines, and it’s strong evidence that a page’s Google performance tells you very little about how it’s doing in Bing. The two engines run separate crawlers, separate indexes, and separate ranking systems, and there’s a persistent pattern in SEO communities on Reddit of site owners describing pages that rank comfortably in Google’s top three while Bing simply won’t index them, even after basic technical fixes.
That gap matters practically because if your AI visibility strategy leans on Bing (for Copilot or ChatGPT), you can’t assume your Google rankings are a proxy for it. You have to check Bing separately.
IndexNow is not a shortcut — and treating it like one backfires
IndexNow gets oversold constantly. What it actually does is notify participating search engines that a URL was added, changed, or removed, which can shorten the discovery delay after a real content update. What it does not do is force indexing, force a ranking, or trigger an AI citation. The engines still independently decide whether, when, and how to crawl and evaluate the page — IndexNow is a freshness signal, not an on-demand indexing button. If you’re pinging IndexNow on thin or duplicate pages expecting Bing to suddenly rank them, that’s a misunderstanding of what the protocol is for, and it’s one of the more common myths worth correcting for readers.
Google’s mobile-first indexing rule still applies here
It’s easy to treat “AI SEO” as a totally separate discipline, but the fundamentals haven’t gone anywhere. Google evaluates the mobile version of your pages for indexing and ranking, which means content, headings, structured data, and metadata all need to be equivalent between mobile and desktop — a gap here quietly caps your Google visibility regardless of anything you do for Bing or AI systems.
Meta descriptions are a similar case: Google is explicit that they can shape what shows up in a snippet and influence click-through, but they aren’t a direct ranking factor. Competitor content that claims Bing treats meta descriptions as a hard ranking signal, or that social shares on LinkedIn directly move Bing rankings, is stating something as settled fact that isn’t backed by current primary documentation from Bing. Better to describe these as supporting, indirect signals than to promise they’re a lever you can pull for guaranteed movement.
A framework worth actually using: the AI citation eligibility stack
Instead of another generic “index in Bing, add schema” checklist, it helps to think in layers, because a failure at any one layer breaks everything above it.
Accessible means the relevant crawlers — Bingbot, Googlebot, OAI-SearchBot — aren’t blocked by robots.txt, a firewall rule, bot protection, or a stray noindex tag. Discoverable means the URL is linked internally, sits in a clean XML sitemap, and gets submitted or pinged through IndexNow when it changes. Indexable means the page returns a clean 200 status, has a sensible self-referencing canonical, and isn’t competing with near-duplicate versions of itself. Retrievable means the page actually surfaces for the reformulated version of a query an AI system might run, not just the original keyword you had in mind.
Extractable means there’s a direct, clearly written answer near the top, with descriptive headings, defined terms, and real examples an AI system can lift cleanly. Citable means the page holds up against competing sources on accuracy, originality, and trustworthiness. And click-worthy means there’s a reason for a human to actually visit — data, a tool, pricing, screenshots, something beyond what the AI answer already gave away.
Most published guides stop at “accessible” and “indexable.” The gap between being indexed and being cited lives entirely in the last three layers.
A practical audit, not just theory
If you want to actually check where your own site stands, walk through this in order rather than jumping straight to schema markup, which is usually where people start and rarely where the actual problem is.
Confirm crawl access first — check robots.txt, any WAF or CDN bot rules, and whether Bingbot and OAI-SearchBot specifically are able to reach the page (this is separate from checking Googlebot access, and it’s the step most audits skip). Then check indexing status directly in Bing’s URL Inspection tool and compare it against Google Search Console for the same URL — don’t assume parity. Look at your sitemap for junk: redirects, 404s, and non-canonical URLs submitted alongside your real pages just create noise. Verify IndexNow is actually configured correctly if you’re using it, since a misconfigured key file will silently fail.
Check whether your content renders without requiring JavaScript execution or user interaction, since some crawlers handle heavy client-side rendering poorly. Then look at your canonical tags for conflicts, and finally, look at internal linking pages with no meaningful internal links from relevant category or hub pages tend to get deprioritized in both crawling and topical relevance.
If a page passes all of that and still isn’t indexed, the honest next question is whether it’s actually a quality problem rather than a technical one. Bing has said indexing decisions weigh site quality and other signals beyond pure technical crawlability, so thin content, near-duplicate location pages, and programmatically generated pages with little unique value are common, quiet reasons Bing declines to index something even when nothing is technically broken.
Where Google, Bing, and Copilot each actually matter

The mistake worth avoiding is copying assumptions from one row to another. What’s true for Copilot isn’t automatically true for Perplexity, and what’s true for ChatGPT today may shift as OpenAI adds or changes search partners.
Building your own evidence instead of borrowing someone else’s
The single best way to outrank content that just repeats the 87% Seer number is to run your own small test and publish the results, because nobody else can copy that. A workable version of this: pull 50 to 100 of your own URLs across a mix of blog posts, service pages, and product pages, then record whether each one is indexed in Google, indexed in Bing, where it ranks in each, and whether it’s ever been cited in a ChatGPT or Copilot answer for a relevant prompt. Run the same prompts more than once, since AI answers aren’t always identical between sessions. You’ll likely find pages that are indexed and ranking respectably in Bing that never get cited, and occasionally a page ranking outside the top 20 that does get cited — which is itself the clearest possible demonstration that indexing and ranking are necessary but not sufficient conditions for AI citation.
That kind of original, dated dataset is also exactly the sort of thing other sites will link to, which is a separate SEO benefit on top of the credibility it buys you with a skeptical technical audience.
The myths worth retiring
A short list of claims that show up constantly in Bing SEO content but don’t hold up against current documentation: that Bing indexing guarantees ChatGPT visibility (it doesn’t — OpenAI names multiple providers and partner content sources); that IndexNow guarantees indexing or ranking (it’s a notification, not a promise); that ranking #1 in Bing guarantees an AI citation (retrieval and citation selection happen after ranking, using different criteria); that exact-match keyword stuffing is rewarded by Bing in a way current documentation actually supports (clear topical signals help, but there’s no current primary source backing aggressive exact-match tactics as a ranking lever); and that optimizing for Google and optimizing for AI search are separate disciplines requiring entirely different content (Google has said explicitly that its foundational SEO guidance still applies to AI Overviews and AI Mode).
The bottom line
Bing indexing is worth taking seriously in 2026 — not because it’s replaced Google, but because it’s become a genuine, measurable input into how Microsoft’s AI ecosystem and, to a real but partial degree, ChatGPT decide what to surface. The mistake isn’t paying attention to Bing. The mistake is treating any single index as a gatekeeper for AI visibility overall, when the actual chain runs from crawl access, through indexing and ranking, into retrieval and citation — with quality and relevance doing most of the deciding work at the end of that chain, not the beginning. Build for accessibility and indexability on both engines, then spend the rest of your effort on the parts almost nobody else is covering well: making your content genuinely easy for an AI system to extract, trust, and prefer over the next ten pages it’s also considering.
